Underground

It happens about ninety times a day: excavation damage. Certainly when it comes to gas pipelines, the risks are considerable. That’s why Gasunie puts a high priority on the prevention of excavation damage. Ground radar survey by MapXact offers a solution.

EXCAVATION DAMAGE HAPPENS FREQUENTLY

In 2015, cables or pipelines were touched 32,858 times during excavations. The impact of excavation damage can be considerable, especially with gas pipelines. Gasunie therefore does everything in its power to prevent that. As many as ten trial trenches can be dug to make sure where cables and pipelines are located. It’s a time-consuming and expensive process. No need for any of that with ground radar survey by MapXact.

GROUND RADAR TECHNOLOGY PREVENTS EXCAVATION DAMAGE

To prevent excavation damage, MapXact uses ground radar survey to scan underground infrastructure to a depth of four metres. This way we get a picture of cables and pipelines to the nearest millimetre. We then convert the ground radar maps to 3D visualisation. The result: everything that is underground becomes clear at a glance. You can thus avoid excavation damage without digging trial trenches.

GROUND RADAR WITH AUGMENTED REALITY

There’s even a better way to prevent excavation damage. MapXact and Gasunie are currently co-developing a ground radar with augmented reality. This will give us an underground 3D image with no intermediate layers. Imagine: you’re walking over the land with your ground radar and you can see in real time where each cable and pipeline is. This technique not only saves time but also costs. The underground infrastructure is mapped with extreme precision, so excavation damage can be avoided even more effectively.

The benefits OF GROUND RADAR:

  • Prevent excavation damage and increase safety
  • Promote safety
  • See the exact position of pipelines and cables in the ground beneath the work site
  • 3D images make it easy to interpret the underground layout; instant mapping of the current situation
  • Efficient planning of building projects; no surprises
  • Substantial time and cost savings
  • No need for trial trenches, so less damage to the environment
