Over- and underground

Waste lying on the street is unhygienic, smelly and looks unkempt. Underground containers are a practical solution, but you can’t just start digging. The municipality of Amsterdam asked MapXact to find suitable locations. Using mobile mapping and ground radar technology, MapXact mapped the over- and underground infrastructure.

THE RIGHT PLACE FOR CONTAINERS: ABOVE OR BELOW THE GROUND?

Waste in Amsterdam was a regular topic even in the House of Representatives. The municipality had been looking for years for suitable places to put waste containers. In the capital itself, where there is always a bustle and droves of tourists, waste is frequently seen on the street. And the density of the city’s infrastructure is not limited to the surface. Because of the number of cables and pipelines, old trees and quay walls, Amsterdam underground is pretty full too. But how do you find the right place for containers with so little space left?

MOBILE MAPPING OF OVERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE

MapXact first mapped the overground infrastructure. Which places would be suitable for containers? We created a clear image of the current situation using mobile mapping, a technique with which take 360° photos and do 3D scans of the environment.

SUITABLE UNDERGROUND LOCATIONS WITH GROUND RADAR SURVEY

To look at Amsterdam’s underground infrastructure, MapXact used a ground radar survey. This allows us to scan up to four metres below the ground to see if there is room and what the impact of digging there will be.

GROUND RADAR TECHNOLOGY UNDER DEVELOPMENT

MapXact is currently fine-tuning its ground radar technology. In the near future, we hope to be able to take foundation remains, high water levels and tree roots into account during surveys.

MAPXACT’S BENEFITS FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF AMSTERDAM:
  • Suitable locations for waste containers mapped over- and underground
  • Precise image of what excavation in a specific place will entail
  • Targeted, efficient project scheduling and budgeting
  • Preventing damage and the resulting costs
  • Contributing to solving the waste issue in Amsterdam
